Background of the Study
In Kano, Hausa language broadcasting is a primary channel for disseminating news, cultural programming, and public information. Recent government language reforms have aimed to promote indigenous language use in media by introducing standardized guidelines for broadcasting in Hausa. These reforms target improvements in linguistic accuracy, consistency, and cultural relevance, intending to boost local content production and enhance viewer engagement. Broadcasters are encouraged to incorporate traditional idioms, proverbs, and culturally significant expressions to resonate with local audiences. However, the transformation of broadcasting practices requires substantial adaptation by media professionals, who must balance modern journalistic standards with traditional language usage. While reforms are expected to elevate the quality and authenticity of Hausa broadcasts, challenges such as inadequate training, limited financial resources, and resistance from some media houses pose significant hurdles. This study investigates the impact of these government reforms on the quality of Hausa language broadcasting in Kano by analyzing broadcast content, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder feedback.

Statement of the Problem
Despite government efforts to reform language use in broadcasting, implementation in Kano faces issues including inconsistent adherence to standards, resource constraints, and variable training of media personnel. These challenges affect the overall quality and cultural resonance of Hausa language broadcasts, hindering the intended outcomes of policy reforms.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the changes in broadcasting practices post-reforms.

  • To identify implementation challenges faced by broadcasters.

  • To recommend strategies for better alignment of reforms with industry practices.

Research Questions

  • How have government reforms altered Hausa language broadcasting?

  • What challenges do broadcasters face in implementing these reforms?

  • What measures can enhance compliance and quality?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the effectiveness of government language reforms in Hausa broadcasting, providing valuable insights for media practitioners and policymakers. Improved broadcasting practices can enhance cultural preservation and public engagement in Kano.
